چکیده

The PSR 1259{63 system is unique in that it is the rst radio pulsar found to be in a binary system with a massive main sequence companion. As such, it may be the evolutionary missing link connecting the radio pulsars to the X-ray emitting Be binaries. In this paper, we consider the conditions under which PSR 1259{63 may be the progenitor of the less eccentric, more slowly rotating X-ray Be binaries such as 4U0115+63, A0535+26, and A0538{66. Scenarios invoking the interaction of the pulsar with the stellar wind of the companion are proposed to account for the rapid spin-down phase that must occur in this system if it is evolutionarily linked to accreting X-ray binaries. The unexpected X-ray emission observed from PSR 1259{63 may indicate that the interaction between the pulsar and the Be star occurs at greater distances and produces a greater spin-down e ciency than has been previously calculated.

The high-energy gamma-ray light curve of the binary system PSR B1259 −63, is computed using the approach that successfully predicted the spectrum at periastron. The simultaneous INTEGRAL and H.E.S.S. spectra taken 16 days after periastron currently permit both a model with dominant radiative losses, high pulsar wind Lorentz factor and modest efficiency as well as one with dominant adiabatic los...

X–RAY EMISSION OF THE PULSAR–Be STAR BINARY PSR 1259–63*

X–rays are detected from the pulsar–Be star binary PSR 1259−63 only after apastron passage. We suggest that the X–rays result from accretion on to the pulsar magnetosphere of matter captured from the Be star wind. The capture efficiency changes markedly at this phase, in line with the observations, provided that the wind is slow (∼ sonic) at large distances from the Be star. Accepted by The Ast...

X-ray emission from the PSR B1259–63 system near apastron

The PSR B1259–63 system contains a 47 ms radio pulsar in a highly eccentric binary with a Be-star companion. Strongly time variable X-ray emission was reported from this system as the pulsar was near apastron in 1992-early 1993. The variability was primarily deduced from an apparent non-detection of the PSR B1259-63 system during a first pre-apastron ROSAT observation in February 1992. We have ...

Was the Propeller Mechanism Active during the Periastron Passage of Psr 1259{63?

Timing analisys of PSR 1259{63 during its recent periastron passage suggested that the pulsar was spinning-down due to the propeller mechanism (Manch-ester et al. 1995). This requires that the radio pulsar mechanism is temporarily quenched. On the basis of the Be equatorial disk model derived from the dispersion and rotation measures analysis (Melatos et al. 1995), we show that the mass innow i...

RXTE/ASM observations of PSR B1259−63 near the 1997 periastron passage find no emission brighter than ∼10 times that detected by ASCA during the 1994 periastron encounter, demonstrating that the pulsar is unlikely to have undergone even brief episodes of accretion.
